Boycie - For gawd sake Marlene... I might be able to con people into buying my cars, I might be able to convince them that you’ve conceived and gave birth in 7 days flat, but how the hell am I gonna persuade them that my grandad was Louis Armstrong?!
We’re back in Peckham with a bump, literally! We’re introduced to Anna, a German girl who is looking for a hotel but ended up at the Nags Head where she can’t understand the staff or the locals (despite her being able to speak English!) We get Del trying to speak French to her, which backfires massively and then Albert proves his worthlessness again by claiming to speak German.
Del - I want you to ask her what her name is, you know, where she lives, her address - that sort of thing alright?
Albert - Right, leave this to me... Vot ist yor name?!
Rodney soon becomes the translated between cockney and Queens English for Anna who has to ask “Please?” Every time she wants something translated. This then pays off as the joke is reversed cleverly later on.
Anna - My disruptive influence on Spencer makes it inexpedient to remain.
Del - Please?
Rodney - He says ‘On your bike!’
The joke of Del speaking a bit of French but then struggling even more with other languages continues from the last episode where he went around Amsterdam saying “Ajax” all the time. Del again reverts to a German place name (probably again known through football) “Monchengladbach” and then the famous “Vorsprung Durch Teknik”. Little additions to the script of Anna picking up the cockney lingo is great too “I think now things are not cushty!”
Having thought through the situation and putting 2 problems together, Del tries to get Boycie and Marlene to adopt Anna’s unwanted baby. We learn that they have been struggling to have a child of their own or adopt due to Boycie’s history which we hadn’t known about until now.
Del - Boycie did little bit of a stretch when he was younger
Rodney - Yeah, what for?
Boycie - Purgery, embezzlement, conspiring to pervert the course of justice, fraudulent conversion of travellers cheques, and attempting to bribe the mayor of Lambeth!
However Rodney works out that Del has once again sniffed an earner out of it.
Rodney - Selling a baby - it’s like something out of Dickens’ times!
As the baby is born, the deal falls through. Firstly because Anna has fallen in love with the baby, secondly the baby is a girl and not a boy as Boycie had been promised “it’s amazing isn’t it? Everything you buy off him has got something missing!” But then also Rodney reveals that Spencer the father of the baby was from a West Indian family.
Del has his moral compass tested in this episode. He’s trying to keep everyone happy but ultimately going through with the deal wasn’t in anyone’s interest. The episode also tees up future episodes - notably with the appearance of the Rajah computers made in Mauritius which play a role in ‘The Frog’s Legacy’.
Tomorrow’s episode: The Miracle of Peckham
