Rodney - Selly Atwell’s our solicitor?! Bloody hell, Del - he’s more best than the villains!
There’s an air of ‘things getting back to a state of normality’ in Nelson Mandela House at the beginning of this scene: Rodney has gone and made a less than shrewd move to tie up the entire business’s capital in £500 of sun tan lotion, just as Britain enters a cold snap. Needless to say, Del’s none to pleased with it and they’re hard up for cash.
As Albert falls down the brewery cellar, we get to see Del’s opportunism spring into action. As soon as Albert utters the words “sue the brewery” he goes from being concerned about getting Albert up and on his feet to concerned how much money he can make. Rodney remains more concerned on the former however, and suggests calling a ambulance which Del immediately responds to as “That will look great on the report! Well done, Rodney!” There’s some great dialogue in here as always these panic moments provide.
Del - You don’t know what sort of damage he’s done - he might have broken something!
Rodney - Yeah, he has - about 4 dozen bottles of Guinness!
Del - Uncle Albert, did I hear you groaning in pain?
Albert - No!
Del - Well why not?! Come on!
As they realise there’s nothing wrong with him and concoct with Solly a plan to claim based on amnesia and loss of use of legs, it’s clear that Del has himself convinced that they are on to win big money. It’s Del’s greed that ultimately is his comeuppance however.
In the end, the revelation that Albert has learned to fall properly to not injure himself, and has had 15 known previous lawsuits for falling down holes, only proves that he is a genuine Trotter and fits right into the family dynamic. There’s a comforting element to this but it also sets the Trotters back far more than they could’ve been. I also like the ongoing joke about Mike’s neck - he’s the one in real pain but no-one gives him any sympathy or care as they are all so distracted in making money. Mike really breaks through into being a core character in this and the last episode.
Tomorrow’s episode: It’s Only Rock and Roll
